In 1922, Reiki was born in Japan or as many people like to phrase it, in 1922 Mikao Usui (re)discovered Reiki while meditating on Mt. Kurama near Kyoto. In either case, 2022 is the year that all and every Reiki practitioner may celebrate 100 year of Reiki.
Reiki has seen many changes in those 100 years. When Usui died in 1926, he had trained a few thousand students and a few Masters in Reiki practice. Out of this first generation of Reiki practitioners, several Reiki styles and denominations came into being, all representing Reiki in their own way.
Through one of these Reiki Masters, Chuyiro Hayashi, Reiki spread to the West. In the late 1930s, Hawayo Takata was trained in Reiki by Hayashi. She promoted Reiki in the Western world, starting in Hawaii and from there to the American mainland. Since the 1980s, Reiki really started to globalize and today, Reiki can be found in most countries in the world.
In the West, like in Japan, numerous Reiki styles developed and to date, several hundreds styles can be found.
